PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO 'SHAME' SOMEONE WHO SENDS YOU AN UNWANTED PRIVATE MESSAGE - JUST BLOCK THEM AND DON'T GIVE THEM ANY ATTENTION!

Most options to ignore or block a nickname will block only private messages to you from them. It does not block you from seeing what they say in the main room. Also, most options only work for as long as you and the person you are ignoring are in the room.  If they (or you) leave and return, the ignore/block may need to be set again.
There are also some options which will work for blocking ALL private messages in some situations (see end of message).

How to ignore unwanted messages:
Key:
nickname = the nickname of the person you want to block/ignore
your-nick = your own nickname
private messages = usually means any person-to-person private message, such as private chat, /msg and notices from another person.

There are several options ---

If you are using the WebChat (connected through the website) -
Click on the nickname on the sidebar list of nicknames and the options will open and there is an option to ignore. This also blocks you from seeing their messages in the room.
[if you do not see the nicknames list, try clicking on the person silhouette - probably in the upper right corner of the chat window]

-----
Using your own nickname, you should be able to change your settings by typing:
/mode your-nick +Rc
This is a combination of 2 mode settings and should block private messages from anyone who is not registered, and anyone who is not in any room you are currently in.

-----
If you are using a 'script' or a chat 'client' (program) of some kind, or an IRC app on your phone or tablet, the following option may or may not work, depending on what you are using to chat with. You should check the help file for your client/program/app for any information specific to that program:

If you use mIRC, the /ignore command is useful:
/ignore nickname 3 for messages in the channel from the specified nickname. (the 3 picks up the encrypted ip so they will remain ignored if they simply change nicknames)
/ignore -pndi nickname 3"ignores", or blocks the particular nickname from private messaging you. (Again, the 3 picks up their ip so it should hold even if they change nicknames. But if they quit and return on a different ip, you will need to set this again.)
[/ignore -l (lowercase L) will show your ignore list]

On any connection, you should be able to use the /silence commands:
you also can try this command to block all private msgs from a specific user:
/silence +nickname

/silence + without any nickname will block private messages from everyone.

[/silence without any nickname will show your silenced list]
--------------
These are some settings you can use to block multiple people from privating you.  SOME chat clients/programs will remember these settings, but the webchat DOES NOT retain these settings, so you have to type them each time you reconnect.

Bookmark this page and you can return to it whenever you need.

I hope this is helpful.
